Apocryphal
Apocryphal 是一个形容词。常用来形容那些非常出名但其实可能是编造出来的故事或轶事。
- The story about George Orwell and the cherry tree is likely apocryphal. (关于乔治·华盛顿和樱桃树的故事很可能是杜撰的。)
- Most of the rumors about the celebrity’s secret marriage were apocryphal. (关于这位名人秘密结婚的大多数传闻都是不可信的。)
- There are many apocryphal tales about the founding of the city. (关于这座城市的建立有许多真实性可疑的传说。)
- 源自希腊语：apokryphos (隐藏的)。原指不被正式认可的宗教经文。
记：A-po-cry-phal。想象一个人哭着（cry）讲了一个假（fake）故事。或者联想 apocalypse (启示录)，那种玄之又玄的故事往往是 apocryphal。
